Well the answer is not as simple as that.
Most university and college ESL teachers in the US have masters in ESL. Which is a 2 year course.
Many primary, middle and high schools also employ ESL teachers and they would probably prefer a person with a recognised teaching degree.
Teaching in private schools wouldn’t actually require any qualification, but it would be fairly competitive so I would say the better the qualification the better your chance of finding work. But in fact many of these private schools will employ people on a part-time basis. In the end, if you are a flingebunt

If you work in a public school, you would need a teaching credential from that state. I think all states now require a Bachelors for teachers. Some require a 5th year. Occasionally you can get an emergency credential, but there are so many teachers now with regular credentials, that you would have great difficulty getting hired.
Private schools can hire anyone that they feel has the right background and experience, but they pay much less than public schools. Donald B
