what makes an esl tefl certificate proper accreditation ?

esl
twism asked:

I see all these jobs out there that require a esl/tefl cert. What cert is it that people need in order to teach esl in other countries? Is there a governing board? Is there any classes that are free or companies that are reputable ?
thanks
I dont have a BA so it would have to be requirements for non degree having students.
thanks

To be honest, you dont need a certificate to get a job overseas, or a BA degree. There are some places that will hire you just because you speak American. BUT!!! If you walk into a classroom with no teaching experience at all, you are going to be in FOR A REALLY RUDE AWAKENING. I have a BA degree and I am a pretty good student but I am so glad that I took the CELTA course. I would have fallen pretty hard had I not gotten the training from that course. Do yourself the favor and get certified, just knowing the information is not enough, you should learn how to teach the information to people who do not speak your language. Good luck, you will make it.

The is NO independent international accreditation body looking at TEFL Certificates despite what some unscrupulous providers might say.

The only thing that matters is reputation. Some certificates have higher reputation than others; some are considered a waste of time and paper.
