As an English teacher you should be assessing the levels of your students and analysing their learning methods. Colleges here might put learners into a remedial classes to catch up with their peers.
I often take classes at college for L2 sudents who are studying other courses such as ITC or Care Courses. Your College should begin to adopt a similar practise of classes for those who wish to improve basic English.
Using English for academic purposes is very specialised it is of no use to the student learning if they have just a basic knowledge without the key skills needed to study at academic level. malcolm j
