It has recently become open to overseas teachers. Because of its rapid growth it seems that it can't get enough English language staff. Korea is a good example. Japan is still a huge market in spite of what you've heard, except they are looking more at qualified EFL teachers rather than just people who are native speakers without teaching experience. South America is another huge developing market with Mexico leading the "charge". Chile and Venezuela are the next largest markets. However, if you are a qualified EFL teacher, you can still work in most countries just fine.
