ideas for tutoring young children in ESL?

sLo asked:

What are some things that I can teach a 6 year old and a 9year old who is learning English as their second language?

The young one is in 1st grade and the other is in 4th grade.
What do 1st graders learn in school?
What do 4th graders learn in school?
I would want to enforce that

What things parts of English can I teach them?
And how should I go about in teaching them? Each session is 1 hour long.

Are you a certified ESL teacher? The kids really need that expertise. In the meantime, teach the younger one what sounds each letter represents; it doesn’t matter what the letter is called, it matters hugely what sounds it represents in what contexts. Ask at your local school to find out what units of study are being taught. Teach the vocabulary of each unit to help with comprehension. Find out what the books in the fourth grade class will be; go online to find a service that will provide “books on tape” so that the child can read and listen at the same time.
Teach in English, with LOTS of demonstrating and modeling.
