Most local Chinese schools place Math and Science at the very top, and have extremely high standards, and below that is Mandarin, and then English. English is very important to them because China is rapidly growing and becoming more international, although not losing their unique culture. Gabwax

Yes ,English is important for some of the Chinese people. But to most of the Chinese people, they will never use English after college all their lives.(In fact, We don't need use English to make a living)
I think there is something wrong with the education department in China. Fortunately,we have realized that English is only a tool for our Chinese people,we will study English when it is necessary.
Now ,English is not so important than before.

Thank you for your interests in My Country. sherlockguo2009

so important that it is now required by law for Chinese students to start learning as soon as they enter school

when I started teaching here it was basically taught in college, I taught in a high school and people were shocked (how did you get a job in high school they would ask), now it is common place and many high schools are not hiring any now more of the new law, kids begin studying English as soon as they enter school

learning English ranks in the top 3 most important
it is required for entrance exams for college as well as grad school
the better your English the better you job and chances to go aboard to work
tutoring is huge, a bit unstable as far as relying on it for an income but, I teach adults and the pay is GREAT! Mr. W

Yes extra, extra tuition is vital to be ahead; this is also evident in english-speaking Singapore, Malaysia - the english language is the world's most common language, useful, usable most anywhere in the world.

Anyone can learn and master the language but not everyone will be familiar with the culture behind the language - that's another story! AQUALUNG

My students while not always the top of their class, they want to learn English to get a good job.

I have had students that were number one in their class, they were special because they had goals and misgivings about their university assignments.

I have had students that couldn't go to the University, but they still had their dream of learning English and working for some foreign company. And their English was so good. My older students want to learn English very much. They are 17 to 25 years old.

I actually asked my students last week why do you take these private English classes...............I was so surprised to hear, because I want to. I assumed most would say their parents forced them, but no, most wanted to take my classes!

So, I am proud of my work, and proud of my students, most want to be here, and yes maybe one percent the parents forced them!!!!!!!!!! But, I was surprised they want to learn English.Amazing, most want to learn English.

I guess, they know that even without going to some University, they can make plenty of money just by knowing English in this global economy. adolphusguzman

Its not that the students are really that interested in English (most of the time) but that if they dont`t do better than the other billion students studying they wont have much of a career. sorry but its true!! Not all though, many of my students genuinly wanted to learn so they could communicate with foreigners. satinguo

It should be very important considering that China has opened up to the outside world. They let foreign investors enter, young people study abroad. All these necessitate that the young Chinese of today should learn English to be able to cope easily. Culture differences is hard enough to go through, an added burden of language barrier makes it even harder.

This is not to say that English is a wonderful language. The Chinese language is very rich and typifies so much the glorious culture of China, but we have to admit that English is somehow the universal language used that has made the international community attain closer linkages. yuanyuan

Yes, I believe learning English in China is very important to them, it is required in the universities and considering how many Chinese are now immigrating to America nowadays, it is very understandable. They take education very seriously and known that English is now kind of international, and so I guess they must know English in order to be successful?? cl
