How do I become an ESL teacher?
one_of_a_kind asked:
I love tutoring but I am looking for a career now in English as a Second Language. What online schools or schools in Southern California offer this program? Would I need to get a master’s degree or simply a certificate? Are these jobs in demand? Thanks!

In general you’ll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work. The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see).
There are plenty of jobs around depending on where you would like to teach. At the moment China is the big destination and there’s a lot of work there, but having said that there’s still work in other countries. Most Americans go for Central/South America and Asia (Europe has visa issues).
Hope this helps! ICAL

A BA in any area and a recognized certificate will do. The most recognized certificates are TESL Canada (Online and on-site), Trinity CertTESOL, and CELTA. A 100-hour certificate will get you an entry-level job in most countries and you can take one online for under $300. Check for more information about the requirements of the top ESL destinations.
