I want to teach English in another country but I keep hearing that I have to be certified. Any help or information on these programs would be appreciated.
I am located in the SF Bay Area, California.

If you are in the United States, you can check out your local Community Colleges for programs. In the town where I live, there is a TESOL program at both the main University, as well as our community college. It just depends on whether you already have a degree or wish to earn one in conjunction with the certification programs. I could help you find an actual program in your area, if I knew what state you are in… Let me know if I can help further.

Cambridge ESOL’s internationally recognised Teaching Awards are taken by over 12,000 people each year. They provide a route into the English Language teaching profession for new teachers, and first class career development opportunities for experienced teachers.

    Hope this will help.

    TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test)

This flexible and accessible award focuses on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers, whatever your background and teaching experience.

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)

If you’d like to teach English to adult learners, CELTA is the best known and most widely taken initial ‘TESOL/TEFL’ qualification of its kind in the world.

CELTYL (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners)

This is the qualification for you if you’d like to specialise in teaching English to children or teenagers.

ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching)

If you’re already teaching English, ICELT will help you to improve your skills in the context in which you’re currently working.

Certificate in Further Education Teaching Stage 3 with the Certificate for ESOL Subject Specialists

You need this qualification if you’ve chosen to teach English in Further, Adult and Community Education in the UK - the ‘Learning and skills sector’.

Do you have a bachelor’s? Many programs accept any teaching license or English degree. Search “Teach English in ______ (whatever country you’re interested in)” and you will find MANY links to people who need English teachers. Also check out teacher publications (online and hardcopy) - there’s ALWAYS ads for teaching abroad.

    Good Luck!
