Can I teach ESL classes with a major/minor in linguistics?

Spanish Teacher asked:

I have a BA in Spanish and Masters in Education. I am interested in going back to school and obtaining an ESL license. I am working full time as a teacher and won’t have time to do the necessary student teaching practicum in an ESL classroom and am looking alternate routes to be able to teach ESL. I found (at the school Im interested in applying to) a Linguistics minor which does include some ESL classes but looks as though I wouldn’t have to do student teaching with that. Can anyone tell me if I would be able to teach in an ESL classroom with just a linguistics major/minor? Or, do I really need to have the ESL classes and practicum to be hired.

It totally depends on your state’s laws. In Arkansas, you have to have a degree, usually a certification, then go back and go through the “ESL Academy” which is provided by your school and the state and is an intensive training program, or you can go to college and take ESL classes. If your state provides training, you may want to opt for that because it might be cheaper and your school might pay for it. Call your Dept. of Ed. to see what they require because some states dont care what your degrees are in, as long as you are willing to learn…and some are more stricts and REQUIRE the training to be done before you start. Good luck.
