Can I support myself and my son by teaching ESL online?

I have been teaching English as a Second Language for about 20 years now (I have a Masters, and am licensed to teach K-12), but I’m getting tired of working full-time in the schools. I would love to work from home, but can’t figure out how to get started teaching online, or even if it would be possible to support us by this method. Does anyone have any experience and/or helpful advice that could either get me started or steer me away from it? Thanks!

    Frankly I seriously doubt it. Languages need to be spoken to learned. At the present time, most people don’t have the ability to web cast so they couldn’t talk to you on line.

    Here’s an idea, many churches and other charitable orgs have ESL classes that are offered to the community.

    I don’t know what thy pay instructors, but you might check with some local orgs for that kind of service.

    There have been adverts on the eslcafe and other TEFL sites - it’s an attractive thought (a lot of us are tired of the classroom) but I would doubt if you could do it full-time.

    Have a look on the TEFL jobsites and you could maybe post on the General Forum on the eslcafe - there are thousands of posters.

    You could also answer the adverts and if it works (or even if it doesn’t), post on the forums.

    There are many on line schools that need teachers./ The problem is breaking in on them for a job. Most will not hire a person with a Bachelors degree to teach on a college level. Once you obtain your Masters degree that may be done. You are qualified to teach on line at a high school level. You probably should look for what is called virtual high schools but most will require a license in the state where the school is located.

    You could also offer on line teaching on your own. The difficulty would be in obtaining students.

    Teaching on line in ESL will be a battle since many will want a teacher in person and there are schools that offer that service for free.. You could attempt either of the two methods outlined above but do not leave your present job until you are established in your new venture.
