Can i ask the teachers to put me in a ESL class instead of regular english?

i guess i passed the test that says i should be in regular english classes a while back, but i want to take ESL now. it`s hard for me to understand some of the stuff i been learning lately. is it possible for me to change my class to ESL. im in high school right now and im full japanese so im a non-native

    Your English is quite good for someone who does not speak English as the first language. Your English is also better than some people I know who speak it as their primary language, in writing at least!

    You can make an appointment with your counselor at school and speak with them about your concerns. I also suggest speaking with your English teacher. If they agree that you are struggling with the language then they can place you in an ESL class, if it is available. But unfortunately, it’s their decision. Schools here aren’t nearly as strict as they are in Japan (or so I’ve heard) so what you may think is struggling is actually not struggling. It’s all perspective, really. Consult your teacher and counselor and see what they say. Ally H

    ESL programs have pretty strict rules from the government that they have to follow. It is probably not possible to go back once you have been placed out. The rules only care about how many years you have been learning English, not how well you are doing.
    If you need extra help, maybe the ESL teacher can give you some hints or even tutor you. Also, the regular teacher should use some different teaching methods for you - sometimes called Sheltered Instruction.
    If you stick it out and work hard, it will be better for you in the long run because you will improve faster than if you went back to ESL.

    Honestly you would do your self a disservice with the level you are writing at atm if you were to go back to a ESL class. You may be struggling a little but in the end you will have better english skills if you stick with it and ask for additional help when needed then if you just go back to an esl class. ESL classes are designed to get you up to the point you can be successful with hard work in a regular classroom, not as an easy alternative to the regular classroom. ziff

    There are laws that prohibit that. You passed the exam and have been exited out of the EL program. Your tests show that you are proficient enough to do the work. I suggest you speak with your english teacher and tell him/her that you are struggling with the language at times and it would help if they slowed down for you a little bit. Also, see what tutoring options are available at your school. They are there to help you. d_brail
