Can children accompany TESOL/ESL teachers on overseas assignments?
Empress asked:
I am very interested in getting my Associates in Foreign Language education with certification in TESOL/ESL. I really want to teach in public schools during the school year but want to travel as a TESOL teacher during the summer, but I’m a parent and would love my child to gain that experience instead of boring camp! Help please! Thanks!

It depends on the host/sending agency. It’s not usually a problem in China, but may be in Japan due to their small houses and high cost of living. I don’t know about other countries.
I’ve known several foreign teachers in China who brought their children with them. I used to have a neighbor who brought her husband and two children with her when she taught over the summer vacation, and there was a teacher one of the high schools in my home province who had an adult son who lived with her. Firstly it’s unlikely you’ll be able to find TEFL teaching work for just a couple of months in Summer. Contracts are usually for the academic year and if there’s any extra work it’s given to teachers already in place.
Meanwhile it would be useful to know how old your child is and whether there is anyone else there to help look after them! Joe
