BSS asked:

I’m starting to think teaching ESL may be something I’m interested in, since I already want to major in linguistics. What’s the process of teaching abroad? What’s the typical job availability/pay? Do I have to be fluent in the language of the country I teach in? What are the most common/best countries to go to? Any advice or experience would be appreciated.

I have a secondary ed teaching certificate for English/Language Arts, and I’m trying to choose a specialization of either ESL or Reading.

Which do you think would be more interesting, as a teacher?

Which specialty is in higher demand at the moment (so it’s easier to find a job)?

Which one might be easier and less stressful, as a teacher?

Thanks a lot!

Laney asked:

Please only answer if you actually know the answer, even the Louisiana dept of ed doesn’t seem quite sure.

I got my CLAD multiple subject teaching credential in California, and now I am teaching ESL in Louisiana (all subjects). Nobody seems quite sure if my CLAD certification covers the bases so I don’t have to go through ESL certification in Louisiana or not.

Clad stands for Cross-cultural Language And Academic Development.

Obviously I would be pretty happy to find out that it does certify me!
